What Makes Weight Loss so Difficult?
Oftentimes, people struggle to understand why it is that they have difficulty with losing weight. When mankind was still a species of cave dwellers, the world in which we lived was very different to the world which we inhabit today. Food was not guaranteed; you couldn’t just decide you were hungry and get something to eat. There was no form of food preservation or food storage; therefore, you ate when food made itself available and that was it. If a hunt was successful then there would be meat; if a source of scavengable food was found, then there would be vegetation available to eat. However, there was no farming and all food had to be consumed as soon as possible, to prevent it from rotting and going bad. Therefore, our ancestors’ solution was to lay down fat. Energy from excess calorie consumption would be put on as weight and stored for use during less plentiful times, when food and nutrition was harder to come by. In short, directly in contrast to its role today, fat was once absolutely essential towards the survival of our species and even of your own ancestors.
However, in our modern world, saving up energy as fat for times of hardship is not something that we need to worry about particularly. The plentiful nature of food means that our bodies, still predisposed genetically to store fat at any opportunity, easily begin to get a little too large and heavy; this can be a problem! However, overcoming our natural genetic predisposition for putting on fat can be hard—our bodies simply don’t want to give up those fat reserves unless they really need to!
But that’s not the only challenge we face when it comes to losing weight. As well as trying to battle against our own genetics to start shedding those pesky pounds, there’s also the difficulty that snacking raises. Let’s face it—actually sticking to a diet can be really quite tough, and oftentimes we all end up having a tiny little snack, a nibble here and there. Unfortunately, though, these little nibbles when we’re starving and in the middle of a 16 hour fast can actually add up to a surprising number of calories and energy content without us even realising it. Whoops! And this can actually massively hinder our efforts to lose weight—and that’s before even mentioning “binge days”.
